Small business SEO in the UK: the £9.95 alternative to a £300-a-month agency

By Sam Butcher, founder of RnkRocket · Prices checked 23 September 2026

UK businesses typically pay an agency or freelancer £500 to £2,000 a month for SEO, and agencies typically start at around £300 a month for a small local package. RnkRocket costs £9.95 a month. It finds what to fix and tracks your rankings weekly, but it does not do the work: you, or your web person, make the changes.

The two are not the same service. The agency does the work; the tool tells you what the work is. The rest of this page is about which one you need.

What does a £300-a-month SEO service include?

smallseo.co.uk, whose published entry price is £300 a month, lists these for every client:

  • A free initial audit and competitor analysis
  • On-page optimisation
  • Off-page link building
  • Google Analytics and Search Console set up
  • Uptime and performance monitoring
  • Weekly or monthly reports, and email support

The important word is does. An agency or freelancer makes the changes and builds the links for you. At an entry price, ask how many hours of work a month the fee buys, and what gets done in them.

What do you get from RnkRocket for £9.95 a month?

The Basic plan tells you what to fix on your site, in order, and checks every week whether your positions have moved. Most sites are set up, with a first audit, in under ten minutes.

What it does

  • A full audit of your site, with a prioritised list of fixes in plain English
  • 25 keywords tracked weekly (UK-wide positions, not by postcode)
  • Google Business Profile checks: categories, hours, photos and reviews
  • One competitor tracked and compared with your site
  • Help drafting content

What it does not do

  • Change your website. It never logs in to your site or publishes anything.
  • Build links or get you press coverage.
  • Manage your Google Business Profile or reply to your reviews.
  • Run ads.
  • Guarantee rankings. Nobody honestly can.

In short: it tells you what to fix; you, or your web person, do it. No contract, and a 14-day free trial with no card (trial users get a limited number of AI fixes). See every plan on the pricing page.

What does a month with the tool look like?

An illustration, not a customer story.

Take a two-person electrical firm in a market town, with a ten-page website and a Google Business Profile that was set up years ago.

  1. Day 1

They add the site. The first audit lists the fixes in order: say, service pages missing their title tags, oversized photos slowing the homepage, and no opening hours on the Business Profile.

  2. Week 1

They add the missing opening hours to the Business Profile themselves, and email the title tags and photo fixes to the person who built the site.

  3. Every week

Their 25 tracked phrases, like "electrician" plus the town, are checked. Movement shows up week to week, not overnight.

  4. Week 4

They re-run the audit to confirm the fixes landed, and pick the next three from the list.

Their month cost £9.95, plus their own time and whatever their web person charges for the two technical fixes. At the cheapest published agency price, the same month would cost £300, and the agency would make the changes for them.

When should you hire an agency instead?

A £9.95 tool is the wrong answer for some businesses. Hire help if any of these is you:

You have no time, and nobody to make the changes

A list of fixes that nobody makes is worth nothing. If neither you nor a web person can act on it, pay someone who will do the work.

Your market is crowded

In busy markets (solicitors, or emergency trades in a big city) you may need links, PR and new content at a pace you cannot keep up yourself.

Your website needs rebuilding or moving

A new site or a move to a new platform can lose the rankings you have. An SEO-literate web person or agency protects them.

You want someone accountable

An agency reports to you every month and answers for the results. A tool does not.

If you do hire someone

  • Ask what they will do each month, and roughly how many hours that is.
  • Keep your Search Console, Analytics and Business Profile in your own name, and give them access.
  • Ask them to share every change they make to your site.
  • Prefer month-to-month terms.
  • Walk away from ranking guarantees. Google's own advice on hiring an SEO says no one can guarantee a number one ranking.

There is a middle way, too: use a tool to find the fixes, and pay your web person or a freelancer by the hour for the ones you cannot do yourself.

Small business SEO costs: common questions

How much does SEO cost for small business in the UK?

UK SEO agencies typically start at around £300 a month for a small local package (smallseo.co.uk: "from £300 per month", checked 23 September 2026), and Whito's 2026 UK cost guide puts typical spend at £500 to £2,000 a month. Doing it yourself costs your time plus any tools: Google's own tools are free, and RnkRocket starts at £9.95 a month.

How much should SEO cost for a small business?

Enough to get the basics done and kept up, and no more until they are working. If you can do the work yourself, that can be free or the price of a tool. If you pay someone, compare the fee with what a new customer is worth to you: work out how many extra jobs a month it needs to pay for itself, and whether that is realistic. Always ask what the fee buys each month, in hours and tasks.

What is the 80/20 rule for SEO?

It is the Pareto principle applied to SEO: a small share of the work produces most of the results. For a small business, that 20% is usually a complete Google Business Profile, one clear page per service with a good title, a site that is quick on a phone, and a steady flow of reviews. Get those right before paying for anything else.

Is it worth paying for SEO services?

It can be, if the provider does work you cannot do yourself and shows you what they did each month. It is not worth it if you are paying for reports about problems nobody fixes. Google suggests asking an SEO whether they will share all the changes they make to your site.

Does RnkRocket do the SEO work for me?

No. It audits your site, lists the fixes in priority order, checks your Google Business Profile and tracks your keywords weekly. You, or your web person, make the changes. If you want someone to do the work for you, an agency or freelancer is the better fit.

Is there a contract?

No. You can cancel from your account, and your plan runs to the end of the period you have paid for. The 14-day free trial needs no card, and trial users get a limited number of AI fixes.
